My boy Nicky G turned me on to this cat.

Bad Fathers

These LA boys are making some fun music.

Whenever a blizzard rolls through, I always think of this classic Simpsons episode...

Beady Eye

Liam Gallagher from Oasis' new band, Beady Eye, drops their first single and video.

"Four Letter Word"

From SPIN:

In the latest release from his post-Oasis band Beady Eye, off the band's debut full-length, Different Gear, Still Speeding (out in February), Liam continues his ceaseless war of words with brother Noel, again, this time riffing on the lyrics to Oasis' 1994 breakthrough hit, "Live Forever," which was penned by Noel:

"Nothing ever lasts forever," Liam snarls in the new track, aptly-titled "Four Letter Word." Watch the video below!

And it gets nastier: "You've had enough / Staring out of dead end eyes / I don't know what it is I'm feeling / A four letter word really gets my meaning," Liam sings. And the sonic sucker punch sounds good -- seductive strings swell with a muscular and, at times, psychedelic Britpop sound.

But one thing is for sure: You can take Liam out of Oasis, but you can't take Oasis out of Liam: In the clip, he stands stoic at the mic, sings coolly but tough in his nasal Manchurian drawl, and dons the unnecessary sunglasses that have long been part of his Britpop uniform.

And while Noel's presently laying low with his family, with some talk of a solo album in the not-too-distant future, we hope he'll retort soon, and help this sibling rivalry live forever.

Swagger Wagon

I love this.

This is the Sienna family, reppin the Toyota Sienna minivan.

Adorably gangster.

Oh, Enrique

Enrique Iglesias dropped this club banger last week and all the prisses are complaining about the vulgarity.

"Tonight I'm Fucking You"

I think it's fuckin steamy.

And this video is beyond sexy. Smokin!

Merry Christmas

Best of 2010

Here is my list of Best Songs of 2010. Obviously, it's not a list of the "best" songs, just my favorites... However, I will say that Cee-Lo's "Fuck You" was the best song of the year. Hands-down. There were so many great songs this year, so as always, it was very difficult to widdle it down. But I did my best. Enjoy, hate, add to, subtract from, or just make fun of my love for Pop Music. Or just ignore this note and fuck off.

Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays, and Happy New Year.

xo, Robal

The Head & The Heart

Expect to hear a lot more from The Head & The Heart real soon.

Here is the Seattle Band singing "Lost in my Mind" at KEXP studios.

Gorgeous harmonies, creative lyrics. I'm a fan.

Conan vs Black Guitar Battle

Watch this all the way through.

Jack Black was a guest last night on Conan.

Black accused Conan of not being in a real band.

A guitar battle ensued. With a very special guest joining them.

If you want to skip to the guitar battle, it starts around the 7 minute mark.

Cold War Kids

I needed to give this song about 3-4 spins before I fell in love with it.

Been a fan of this band for years and absolutely respect the hell outta their original sound.

They have really grown with this single. Gorgeous.

Keep em comin, kids.

This dude Freddie Gibbs is gonna blow the fuck up.

Hottest flow I have heard in a long, long time.

Probably since Wale came up.

Turn em up if you like hip hop music.

LA Twats

Fucking LOLZ.

Badly Drawn Boy, aka Damon Gough, lost his temper at some "LA Twats" at last week's Troubadour performance.

I kind of love it when artists lose it on the moody assholes in the crowd.

There are way too many people at gigs because they want to be seen, not because they want to see the act.

From Undercover News:

At first the singer sounded angry, telling the audience members to “f*ck off if they don’t want to be here,” and calling one woman who shouted “give us our money back!” a “c*nt”, but he reeled it back after saying “fuck off you LA twats” by adding that he was “just saying the LA twats need to fuck off, not the LA nice people. Everyone knows that LA is full of nice people, but it’s also tattered with a bunch of f*cking c*nts that need to get a f*cking life,” which drew a laugh from the audience.

After the outburst he played ‘What Tomorrow Brings’, which ended up being his final song for the night.

CB450 Bobber

I'm drooling... I wish I was kidding... or exaggerating... Words can not even begin to express my love for this bike...

Oh. My. God.

Yes, you guessed it. From Bike EXIF:

Every now and then a bike comes out of left field, and this one was spotted by designer Luca Bar. When I saw the images, I immediately tagged it as the product of one of the big Japanese workshops, but no—it’s a backyard build from a US enthusiast. This machine is a 1971 CB450 that gained a new lease of life when current owner Scott Halbleib got his hands on it. He stripped it down to the frame and motor, and turned it into a bobber-style custom.

Scott was inspired by the Japanese Gravel Crew style, and used a tank and exhaust system from Benjie’s Café Racer to get the aesthetics right. According to Scott, “The project took ten months and quite a bit of $$$. It was done the night before the Mods vs. Rockers show—it won Best Rocker and Best in Show—and took home the Best Jap Bike from the Beatersville show the following day.”

The fact that the GOP is fighting this bill is beyond shameful.

XS650 Custom

If this custom Yamaha XS650 doesn't turn you on in a sexual way, you and I are just not meant to be...

As always, hat tip to my friends at Bike EXIF:

Classified Moto is the side project of Virginia-based John Ryland who, like me, works in an ad agency during the day. “I’ve always been into vehicles, but never paid much attention to motorcycles until a few years ago,” he says. “My buddy left me his bike when he was out of town. I got my license and fell in love. I started modding bikes about a year and a half ago, and I can’t stop!”

This Yamaha XS650 custom is one of Ryland’s creations; he already has a handful of bikes under his belt. He’s under no illusions about the business, though. “Clearly, my bikes aren’t perfect. My welds aren’t very pretty and I don’t mind a little rust. But I love taking something that was neglected or under appreciated and bringing it back to life with a whole new character. I’m a fan of transforming the more mundane bikes, as opposed to something that’s already special or collectible.”

Hair Blaze

Now usually I would never post a Diddy Ustream bit, but...

Wait for the 30 second mark.

Just do it. LOLZ.

Star Wars Christmas

Hat tip to my old friend, Scanlon, for posting this.

Sci-Fried sings their amazingly nerdy tune, "Star Wars Christmas"

"Rambo"

This is a parody of "Yellow" by Coldplay done by Dr. Dyke and the Cinnamon Cowboys.

Visit Dr. Dyke at Myspace

And also check out The 88 at Myspace

There was a man way back in 82
I should explain to you
And he was called Rambo

The sheriff thought he looked like a bum
Oh, he was unwelcome
They arrested Rambo

And when they tortured him
He overpowered them
They underestimated Rambo

He fought so hard
He fought in Vietnam
He got so used to killing Viet Cong
When he returned
Protesters said, Youre wrong
So he resented them

So he hid
Inside a rat-filled cave
He could not eat or shave
Unhygienic Rambo

He never smiled
Oh no, he always frowned
Richard Crenna talked him down
Sensitive Rambo

Hes not afraid
Hell take on any man
Dont think he cant
Because I know he can
Rambos prepared
Hes always got a plan
Next stop Afghanistan

Its true
He risked his life for you

He had a knife
And wore a red headband
And Im his biggest fan

Shovelhead Bobber

Here is one mean motherfucker, a Shovelhead Harley that's been beefed up to drooling specs...

Of course, stolen directly from Bike EXIF:

For the past few days, the center of the custom universe has been in Japan, at the the Mooneyes Yokohama Hot Rod Custom Show. Guy Bolton of Greasy Kulture magazine was asked to present an award, and this is the bike he chose. It’s long and low and dark, and it’s called Night Sky Bobber. The builder is Hide Motorcycles (Hidemo) of Kawasaki City, an outfit that we’ve featured before on Bike EXIF. Under the custom bodywork is a 1967 Harley-Davidson FLH—one of the first shovelheads—with a motor boosted to 86ci (1420cc), presumably with the help of a stroker kit.

The bike is also running a modified rigid frame and modified forks, with a 19” wheel at the front and a 15” at the back. The tank, rear fender, oil tank, bars and seat are all custom Hide items, and the finish is just the right side of slick. I’ll hold judgment until I see more of the bikes that attracted attention at Mooneyes, but I’m wondering if we’re seeing a move away from the shiny side of Harley customizing in Japan

Civil Twilight

This Wind-Up Records act was in my head this afternoon, so I figured I'd post the clip.

Civil Twilight, singing their gorgeous piano-heavy rock tune, "Letters from the Sky"

It's a year old, but I don't care. This song is amazing.

Once again, Jon Stewart and the brilliant writers of The Daily Show, are the only media faces with the balls to call out the GOP.

The Republicans have once again blocked a bill to assist 9/11 first responders and their families with healthcare and economic support.

Watch this clip. Now. Jon pulls off the gloves and speaks from the heart. And calls those fuckers OUT.

40 Nights of Rock n Roll

Songwriter Meets A Suit

This brought the LOLZ.

Couldn't have said it better myself...

MJ + Akon

Really? Did we need to release this song?

It's a lovely tune, but this will not improve on Michael's legacy in the least.

Michael Jackson is the greatest. Of all time.

This could have stayed in the archives for a while. A long while.

Too soon? For mediocrity, yes.

New Dre

I'm diggin the new Dre track with Snoop and Akon, "Kush"

Berniebuster

Give em hell, Bernie!

Vermont's Independent Senator, Bernie Sanders, gave a nearly 9 hour filibuster today to fight the Tax Cut Bill.

What a legend.

Hat tip to Keith Olbermann for the footage and commentary.

Adele

This is Adele.

She has one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard.

My boy Cobra Kahn posted this. And I'm so glad he did...

I was standing outside Bowery Electric about a year ago, right before I left for Los Angeles.

She was standing next to me smoking a cigarette. I said, "You're Adele, aren't you?"

Her reply, "Shhh, I'm underage."

I laughed hard. We talked for about 20 minutes. She is so rock n roll.

Bernie Sanders

Populism, as defined in Wikipedia:

Populism, defined either as an ideology, (more rarely and uncommonly) a political philosophy, or a type of discourse, i.e., of sociopolitical thought that compares "the people" against "the elite", and urges social and political system changes. It can also be defined as a rhetorical style employed by members of various political or social movements. It is defined by the Cambridge dictionary as "political ideas and activities that are intended to represent ordinary people's needs and wishes". It can be understood as any political discourse that appeals to the general mass of the population, to the "people" as such, regardless of class distinctions and political partisanship - "a folksy appeal to the 'average guy' or some allegedly general will".This is in opposition to statism, which holds that a small group of professional politicians know better than the people and should make decisions on behalf of them. Nevertheless, populist discourse frequently - specially, but not always, in the Latin American case - buttresses an authoritarian, top-down process of political mobilization in which the leader addresses the masses without the mediation of either parties or institutions.

CB250 Custom

This builder took a tiny engine and gave it some fuckin BALLS.

As always, from the greatest custom blog on the net... Bike EXIF:

I spent most of last Saturday at Australia’s top custom shop, Deus Ex Machina, as one of the judges of the inaugural “Boundless Enthusiasm Bike Build-Off.” There were over thirty bikes in the yard, with chrome and paintwork glinting under the unseasonably hot sun. Before the judging officially started, I wandered around incognito and checked out the bikes. Four machines immediately jumped out at me, and of those four, just one appeared to meet the primary judging criteria: “Making the most with the least”. That bike was Much Much Go, built by industrial designer Nick Eterovic. And by the end of the day, Nick had won not only the First Prize, but also the People’s Choice award.

“When the call-out for the competition came, I found out a little late,” said Nick after the show. “But a friend offered me a 1979 Honda CB250T to work with. It was basically a frame and wheels (and a few cobwebs). I had 55 days to build it, but my vision for the bike didn’t take long to form. I’d had a few ideas floating around for a long time—I wanted it to be a nod to Japanese customization, but at the same time, I didn’t want it to be like any bike I’d seen before.”

The Temper Trap

I am really, really diggin this band.

The Temper Trap.

"Fader"

Kick ass video, too. Simple, but really cool.

Best High School Ever

This is so cool. So so so cool. I hope this catches on across the country...

From the Woodbridge Patch, the local paper in Woodbridge, VA:

Woodbridge High School Runs Own Record Label

Music Technology Teacher Shannon Gunn founded Woodbridge High School's very own Polyphonix Records

Fighting for funding in the public school system has got to be a nightmare.

This hasn't stopped Polyphonix Records, founded by Woodbridge High School's music technology teacher Shannon Gunn. Inspired by a similar music technology program in a New Jersey High School, Gunn's creation is primarily run by students.

The program aims at teaching students the business aspects of the recording and perfoming industry and even gives students an opportunity to recrod and release their own albums on the schools' label.

The fact of the matter is an education in music is as important as the rest. Studies have shown that music trains the brain for higher forms of thinking. The study of music and the development of spatial reasoning have been closely linked throughout history.

In addition to Gunn's composition class, students that are part of the after-school club enjoy the opportunity to record and showcase their music. The label has just recently released their fifth full-length – Kurtis Goad's "Simply You." Their releases are even available for purchase on iTunes, Amazon and Rhapsody.
Polyphonix Records also hosts concerts to promote their artists.

In ways, the label founded in 2006 mirrors an actual industry label. While the artists get the press, proceeds from music sales go right back into the club funding audio and recording equipment for future artists to enjoy.
Gunn has found a way to faintly circumvent the terrors of music funding with a self-sustaining program. Not only does it teach the basics of creating and recording music (as well as all the extra educational intangibles), but also puts money right back into the program. Those are the creative juices flowing.

This is an innovative win-win for everyone. The idea has to have been from a musician, or more specifically, a trombone player.

About this column:

In his biweekly column, published on Wednesdays and Fridays, Jon Yi details the Woodbridge music scene with local band and venue profiles as well as album reviews.

Let It Be

This is one of the craziest, most awesome videos I have ever seen in my life.

Huge props to my buddy Mark M for posting. I would have never seen this.

Please watch all the way through.

It's an ad for a Norwegian TV program with the most random group of people ever assembled.

And they're dancing and singing The Beatles' "Let it Be"

You are gonna be blown away by the celebs they brought out of the woodwork for this.

I love that the Santa Monica beach is the fake background on the green screen.

I am absolutely blown away. Video of the WEEK. Possibly of the year.

Nah, that prob goes to "Double Rainbow Guy"

The Beastie Boys

How fucking gangster is this shot, posted on the Beasties' website?

Big ups to my man B-Rock for posting. Hilarious.

Can you guess the actors portraying them here?

This is War

Say what you will about Jared Leto and 30 Seconds to Mars, but these dudes sure know how to make a video.

I have never been let down. This one is about their dreams of New York intertwined.

Pretty weird, pretty fucked up, pretty disturbing.

Pretty fucking awesome.

Mr. Hudson ft Kanye

From HitFix:

Mr Hudson, as you'll recall, is signed to Kanye's G.O.O.D. label, in an attempt to make him as big here as he is in his native Britain. Last year, there was "Supernova," a track and clip that I found both mystifyingly trainwreckish and enjoyable. Then Mr Hudson showed up on Jay-Z's "Bluprint 3," as the remaker of Alphaville's "Forever Young" on cleverly titled "Young Forever."

Now he's back, promoting the second single from his June release "Straight No Chaser" (not to be mistaken for the a capella group of the same name), "Anyone But Him." He and Ye are after the same girl, which to the fair maiden seems like the choice between apples and a media-magnet rapper.

The song is catchy, for sure, though the pour-not-dab of auto-tune seems inappropriate, considering the blonde blaster's pipes.

Coldplay Christmas

Coldplay's "Christmas Lights"

Stolen from my buddy Matt's killer music blog, A Heart Is A Spade.

NYC from the Sky

My buddy Dan posted this clip. Amazing footage of the New York City skyline from, well, the sky.

We are assuming this is recorded from some sort of "drone" or other remote-controlled aircraft.

The shots of the Brooklyn Bridge are stunning.

Thanks, D.

The song is growing on me with each spin, but the video is simply incredible.

Cee Lo is the Man

Cee Lo's new video for "It's OK" is outstanding.

He is on fire with this record. Love love love me some Cee Lo.

Some would argue this, but I truly believe Danger Mouse is responsible for his post-Goodie Mob success.

Uncomfortably Numb

I am typically not a fan of public online humiliation, but jesus fucking christ.

This is unbearably awful.

Hesta Prynn

I think I'm in love...

My boy Bill just sent me over this link for Hesta Prynn's video of "Can We Go Wrong"

Then, I check my email and there's an email from a music lawyer that I know inviting me to a holiday party.

Guess who is DJing said party? Yeah, Hesta Prynn.

Diggy Simmons

I posted the freestyle video from Rev Run's son, Diggy, a few months ago.

The kid impressed me with his freestyle chops, but man is he coming into his own.

No nepotism behind his contract with Atlantic from the sound of this ill track.

Dude has got some flow. Fact.
